FOR OWNERS
FOR OWNERS
IN LEXINGTON COUNTY.
Most business owners do not actually own a business. They own a job.
If that landed, the rest of this page is for you.
The thirty-day test
| What you ask | What the answer tells you |
|---|---|
| Would thirty days away be hard? | Nothing useful. Everyone answers yes and learns nothing |
| What would specifically break in those thirty days? | The real measurement |
| How long is the written list? | The size of the job you are doing |
| How short is it? | The size of the asset you have built |
| How many lines need your permission rather than your skill? | Where the bottleneck actually sits |
Disappear with no notice, on paper, and write down what stops rather than what gets difficult. Most owners find the list longer than they expected, and find that most of it is decisions they have never let anyone else make.
The distinction that saves money
| Consulting | Coaching |
|---|---|
| Changes how the business works | Changes how the owner operates |
| Installs process, numbers, seats and systems | Changes decisions, standards, calendar and behaviour |
| Right when the problem is structural | Right when you know what to do and are not doing it |
Buying the wrong one is the most common waste in this category. If nobody knows who owns the next step, a coach will not fix it. If you keep taking the work back onto your own desk, a new system will not fix that either.
This page is part of a larger body of work — start with more of Ben Lovro's writing on real estate, business and systems.
When to spend the money elsewhere
Five reasons to walk away
- You have made the decision already and you are looking for somebody to confirm it.
- You are not willing to change anything about how your week is arranged.
- What you actually want is tactics, rather than somebody checking whether you did what you said you would.
- You are pre-revenue. The missing ingredient is customers, and structure does not produce customers.
- You are in genuine financial distress, which is a matter for an attorney and a CPA before it is a matter for anybody else.
If one of those fits, that is useful information rather than a door closing. It points straight at the help that would do something.
No outcome is guaranteed
No outcome. Not a revenue figure, not a timeline, not a transformation. Anyone in Cayce or anywhere else who attaches a number to a coaching relationship is selling something they cannot deliver.
What is available is narrower: someone who has run the business you are trying to run, who will tell you the truth about what they see, and who will check whether you did what you said. That is most of what accountability actually is.
The riverfront and the Knox Abbott corridor are drawing investment that a city this size would not normally attract, largely because the land is close in and was cheap for a long time. Growth makes an owner-dependent business worse, not better, so a market that is expanding is exactly the wrong place to postpone this.
The local version of the problem
Small and independent, strung along Knox Abbott Drive and State Street. Diners, barbers, repair shops, a handful of professional offices. Very few chains, and almost nothing that would be called a corridor.
Most of the traffic through Cayce is going somewhere else. Capturing spending from people headed to the airport, the campus or downtown is harder than serving a captive neighborhood, and it takes deliberate work.
Small enough that the same faces appear at council meetings, the ballfields and the river cleanups. Municipal services are hyper-local and residents expect to be able to reach someone by name. That cuts both ways for an owner. Reputation compounds faster in a market this size, and so does the expectation that you personally will be the one who answers.
Frequently asked
Questions people actually ask
What is the difference between coaching and consulting?
Consulting installs systems in the business. Coaching changes how the operator makes decisions and spends time. Buying the wrong one is the usual waste.
Do I need to be in Cayce?
No. The Midlands is home ground, but the work is not geographic. Everything is close. The university campus, the airport and downtown Columbia are each a short drive, bus routes reach the city, and a genuine share of residents commute in single-digit minutes.
Is there a free way to start?
Yes — a free learning community and free written material. Use those first. If the free layer is not useful to you, a paid one will not rescue it.
Is this faith-based?
Ben's faith is part of his story and it shapes why he builds the way he does. Nobody is required to share it, and the material does not depend on it.
What actually happens in a coaching relationship?
A regular rhythm, honest assessment of what you are actually doing versus what you said you would do, and pressure applied to the one or two decisions that matter most this quarter. It is not a course and it is not therapy.
Make your next move
A year from now, what will you be glad you started today?
You don't need another promise that everything will be easy. You need something useful to learn — and a next step you're willing to take.
